Things you should consider before choosing a gym in Boise, Idaho, or anywhere!
· Location
Studies show that if the gym isn't convenient, you are less likely to go. Make sure that location is not the main issue preventing you from getting to the gym. Join a gym that is less than 15 minutes away from home or work. Better yet, select a location between work and home. This is the most likely way to remain consistent with the attendance factor of your program. No excuses not to stop by the gym for an hour when you are always either on your way to, or on your way from one or the other.
· Hours
You know yourself better than anyone else and know when you are likely to wimp out and not go to the gym so choose your gym with that in mind. For you night owls, and those who like to work out in a quieter atmosphere, 24 hour gyms are a great alternative, however, personal trainers, tanning and other amenities may not be offered 24/7 so make sure you check. If you like to have access during holidays or weekends, makes sure that you check that out too. I like to workout Sunday mornings and some gyms are closed then.
· Cost
Memberships will vary. Usually there is an initiation fee, but some clubs are moving away from that. Monthly fees can be anywhere from $20 - $75 a month, depending on services. Make sure that you find out what is included. If you like a club because of their tanning facilities, make sure you know if tanning is included in the monthly fee. Same with the pool and personal trainers. Also check to see if there is a year long commitment and if the club will refund you if you move. Whatever you do, stick to your gun and don't be bullied into joining a gym you don't want. There are plenty of options out there and it is your money and your fitness program, do what is right for you.
· Staff
The gym staff can make or break your physical fitness experience. If you are surrounded by a supportive staff who takes the time to get to know you, chances are you are more likely to return and therefore meet your goals. Make sure that the gym is adequately staffed. It is nice to have help available when you need it. Even if you are a gym veteran, it is nice to have staff support.
Gym staff should also be trained in first aid and CPR. They should also be trained by organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine, or the American Council on Exercise.
· Cleanliness
Training equipment should be clean, in excellent working condition, and available. Make sure the club provides access to a spray bottle properly labeled and containing an anti-microbial to use on the machines and equipment after each use. These anti-microbial agents are very concentrated and diluted with water; they prevent the spread of many microorganisms.
Note that the staff members are following these good hygiene practices as well. If you will be utilizing the locker room and shower facilities, be sure to take a peek inside the shower, the toilet stalls and the sinks to see if they are clean and properly maintained.
· Equipment
This isn't the grocery store; you shouldn't have to spend all your time waiting in line. The equipment should also accommodate people of all skill levels and sizes. If you've found, as many women have, that most weight machines are too big for you, ask if the equipment features smaller weight increments and adjusts to fit smaller people. Also, if you're interested in aerobics or high-intensity workouts, a wooden or suspended floor that gives will be a lot easier on your bones and joints.
Check to see if there is a limitation on cardio equipment. I can run for hours so you don't want guys like me in your guy hogging the treadmill. If you happen to be a body builder, make sure the weights and dumbbells go high enough to suit the progression of your program.
· Atmosphere
You should feel comfortable at your gym -- with the people, the place, and the atmosphere. If you don't, you won't go. Before purchasing a club membership, take a tour during the time you think you'll be working out. That will allow you to see how crowded the gym will be when you're there.
If the club has more than one location, you might be able to work out at a number of sites and choose from a wider variety of classes. But you might also have to deal with a more corporate mentality -- no rule bending and lots of red tape if you want to do anything out of the ordinary.
The little things can make a big difference, too. If music is a big part of your motivation, pick a club with CD players on the machines or one that plays a radio station you can enjoy.
All facilities offer tours, you are normally free to walk throughout, or are escorted and given a brief five to ten minute tour, at which time you should then ask any and all questions you may have. It's routine for clubs, gyms, wellness centers to offer at least a one time free day pass to try out the equipment, classes, and other amenities firsthand, some offer an entire week, or up to 30 days, so be sure to be specific when you ask about passes.
· Programs
Group exercise classes have long been a staple of the average gym-goers program. If group classes are up your alley, be sure to find out if the classes you want are included in your membership, or are there extra fees; What time is your favorite class offered, and how many times per week?
