Wing Chun wooden dummy or otherwise known as muk yan jong is a training equipment made of wood with three arms and a leg used by Wing Chun Kung Fu practitioners for practice. It is originally placed on the ground but revision to the design was made in order that it can incorporate in small living area like apartments in high rise condominiums. The new version is now wall mounted, and the joints have spring to allow mobility. The new version of the muk jan yong is called a live dummy, and users of this dummy can practice Wing Chun even without a live partner and achieve the same result as practicing with a live one.

The muk yan jong moves applied on the wooden dummy are separated into two components. The first movements are mostly concerned with typical situations we encounter on a day to day basis and the techniques and actions used to deal with them. These are represented by the first two "empty hand" form of Wing Chun, which are Siu Nim Tau and Cham Kiu.

Muk yan jong moves are based on logic and practicality. Movements are not superfluous and there are no useless complexities in the sequences or actions. The rationale behind this form is precision and functionality. Every action of muk yan jong is based on simplicity, directness and efficiency. What every Wing Chun practitioner must acknowledge about the "muk yan jong" is that it is not a training exercise for Chi Sau, a conditioning tool or a set of strict sequences to be applied in combat. Rather the wooden dummy teaches the practitioner the basic skill of recovery. Muk yan jong shows the most common mistakes that might happen in the battle and this teaches the practitioner on how to counter act and deal with these mistakes.

Muk yan jong also reinforces the concepts of the three Wing Chun basic forms namely Siu Nim Tau, Cham Kiu and Biu Ji. It will also improve distance, footwork, timing, coordination and power generation, among other attributes it can enhance and develop. As the Wing Chun practitioner moves forward to the second component, more unusual ideas are introduced that are contained in the Biu Ji form in many instances.
