‘Also available in HD.’ A well known message for people who watch digital tv. Sharp quality that can be even sharper. Because what exactly is HD TV and why is it so cool?

What is HD TV?

HD stands for High Definition. Most televisions have SD, Standard Definition. HD is five times sharper than SD, to give an impression. Basically, HD TV gives real life images with much sharper, clearer and brighter colors. The quality has improved immensely. Take for example a sports game in a huge stadium. While the camera focuses on the players, every little detail of the supporters is visible. HD TV’s quality is better than digital or cable tv. In everyway. But to be clear: although HD is digital tv, HD TV and digital are two completely different things.

Also digital

Although HD TV is completely digital, it’s an innovated version of standard digital tv. The quality is sharper and better than a regular digital channel. Colors are brighter and images come alive in your living room. An amazing experience that has everything to do with resolutions and pixels. Combine these images with a decent sound system and HD TV turns your television set into a home cinema. Digital tv is gaining popularity, HD TV is the next step.

To the movies

Tickets to see a movie are getting more and more expensive, so why pay for something that can happen at home as well? Superior sound systems that can be used with HD TV, including Dolby 5.1 Surround which was created originally for cinemas, will bring the cinema into your living room. Clear, sharp images ans a killer sound: take home the movies.

Not for everyone

If you want to enjoy HD TV you’ll need a tv set that’s HD Ready. To get better colors and sharper edges you do need to prepare yourself. HD TV was created for 16:9 wide-screen televisions, the proportion of the human vision. In other words: no wide-screen, no HD TV. Television sets that are suitable carry the HD Ready or Full HD mark. If it’s not there, you will not be able to enjoy HD TV.

Tech stuff

Digital TV is based on the same color depth and the same amount of image lines as analogue tv. Without a doubt digital’s quality is better than ‘normal’ tv, but digital is created on an analogue base. The images get digitalized and are sent back to your tv. So the analogue channel is recycled. HD TV on the other hand is brand new. With a double amount of vertical and horizontal depth en much more color depth. Who has watched HD, will see digital in a complete new way. Sharp, sharper, sharpest.

KPN is the most trustworthy teleprovider in the Netherlands. It’s no wonder why over a million users got digital tv through KPN. HD TV is available as the combination internet & tv at KPN.
