The most common use for sterile saline solution is for contacts. It is used to cleanse the contact lenses and remove any calcium deposits or debris that may build there. Using this solution is also important right before the contacts are to be soaked in solution. It is created to imitate natural tears. This product works especially well for people with sensitive eyes. This solution also is mainly recommended for the soft contact lenses. Although this is the most common use of this saline solution, there are other important uses as well.
Sterile saline solution is basically a solution of sodium chloride, known better as salt water. There are various forms of the solution used for different medical purposes. Another common use is for hospital patrons who require an IV drip of liquid because they aren't able to consume fluids through the mouth and they still need hydration. For instance, if a patient is suffering from severe diarrhea he needs fluids to prevent from being dehydrated. It is also used for patients before and after a surgical procedure because they have fasted for many hours and still need hydration.
Sterile saline solution is also used to flush out ports for those who inject chemotherapy infusions. The port is implanted under the skin and is used to administer the chemotherapy procedure. The solution is required to clean this port after each infusion.
This versatile solution can also be used in nasal sprays. The sterile saline solution can be sprayed into the sinus cavities when those cavities become dry and sore. They can also keep the sinus passages clean when they become blocked up. The promising thing about this spray that makes it safer than the other nasal sprays to remove congestion is that it is non-habit forming. Anyone suffering from allergies can also benefit from saline.
Veterinarians also use the sterile saline solution for some animals for the same hydration and nasal purposes as a person. It is mainly used for cats, dogs, beef and dairy cattle, horses and swine. They also use it for diluting antibiotics and washing mucus membranes as well as other types of tissue surfaces. So there are many important reasons why the medical world relies on sterile saline solution. Be safe when using it at home, and follow the directions carefully.
