Psychological disorder is also known as a mental disorder or mental illness. It is a behavioral or psychological pattern occurring in an individual which creates distress or disability, which is not a part of normal behavior. It is a group of symptoms that create impairment in school, family, work, relationship and/ or in daily life.

Mental disorders are classified by two well established systems. They are –

• ICD-10 Chapter V: Mental and behavioral disorders, part of the International Classification of Diseases produced by the World Health Organization and

• Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) produced by the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

Types

There are approximately 250 different psychological disorders described by DSM-IV TR. Mental disorders vary from post traumatic stress syndrome to simple phobias. Some of the most common Psychological disorders are eating disorders, Schizophrenic disorders, mood disorders, childhood disorders, somatoform disorders, adjustment disorders, sleep disorders, impulse control disorders, anxiety disorders and personality disorders.

Causes

The exact cause for the origin of a Psychological disorder depends upon various aspects. Psychological disorders may arise from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.

(a) Biological Factors - Biological factors that may have an impact in the origin of mental illness are as follows:

• Unusual equilibrium of special chemicals in the brain which are known as neurotransmitters.

• Genetics or heredity.

• Infections.

• Brain defects or injury.

• Prenatal damage.

• Substance abuse.

• Poor nutrition.

• Exposure to toxins, such as lead.

(b) Psychological Factors

• Severe psychological trauma suffered as a child, such as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse

• Childhood abuse or neglect.

• Early loss of a parent

(c) Environmental Factors – There are some stressors which can trigger an illness in a person susceptible to mental illness. These stressors are:

• Death or divorce

• Disturbed family life

• Low self-esteem, anger, or loneliness

• Changing jobs or schools

• Substance abuse by the person or the parents of the individual.

• Stressful life situations, like financial problems.

• Chronic medical conditions, like cancer, HIV- Aids, etc.

• Lack of friendships or healthy relationships
