Like other containment systems, a dog pen provides a great way to confine your dog and keep him safe at all times while giving him enough space to move and exercise.
Dog pens are especially helpful if you want to isolate your puppy from other pets and reduce the damage to your household. You can also use portable dog pens during outdoor activities to keep your dog safe and away from possible accidents.
Here are a few safety tips you need to bear in mind when putting your dog inside a pen:
Don’t forget to leave plenty of fresh water and dog toys when you leave your dog in his pen to prevent him from getting dehydrated and bored. Depending on how long your k9 will be left alone, it may be a wise idea to put some food in his feeding bowl too.
It is advisable to put an outdoor dog pen on a surface that mimics your pet’s toilet area. Make sure that you build it in a shady spot for your dog’s comfort. Solid roofs are not commonly attached to dog pens, but even if yours does, never set it up in direct sunlight.
Choose a type of dog pen that is appropriate to the needs of your dog. Most dog pens are made of metal and plastic, but you can also purchase some pens that consist of wood and other synthetic materials. If you intend to use the pen inside your house, then opt for a wooden type of dog pen as it will complement well with any fixtures. If you’re going to use the pen for outdoor training purposes, choose a foldable or portable type that is made of wire, metal or steel that is easy to set up and does not need special tools for assembly.
To ensure your pet’s safety, select a dog pen that matches your dog’s height and jumping ability. If your dog will not likely jump over the wires, then a dog pen with lower sides might be a good option. Also make sure that the pen is made of high quality materials and does not have any sharp edges that may injure or harm your dog.
When using an indoor dog pen, it is recommended to place something under it to protect your flooring or carpet from scratches, stubborn dirt and stains. If you’re using an outdoor pen, make sure that it has sturdy ground anchors to avoid your dog from inadvertently tipping his pen over.
