If you adopt a Dog from a local shelter or pet rescue organization, you will be saving the life of a dog that deserves a loving and caring home.
I have recently adopted a dog from the Humane Society. Her Name is Roxi, she is a 7 month old collie mix. She had been abandoned left to fend for herself. She was found hungry, frightened and very thin.
As soon as I saw her I knew she was the one. She needed someone to love her and I knew I was that someone.
When we brought her home from the Humane Society she would not walk on a leash or walk through a door way. She was afraid of everything. She ran the first time I gave her a toy. I laid it in the middle of the living room floor and she barked at it for quite some time. Eventually she warmed up to it though.
After forcing her to walk through the door way to go outside and back inside again she soon began walking through of her own free will. It did not take long for her to get used to the leash either.
We had to laugh every time we got a box from the post office or grocery store. Roxi would bark and carry on at this strange intruder. She was just plain afraid of everything. This just made me love her all the more.
Well, you say, you are making a good case not to adopt a dog. No. What a joy it was to watch her change and what a change we saw in her after that first weak. Then a month had gone by and wow it was hard to believe she was even the same dog. Now after 5 months I am thrilled to say she is just an ordinary dog.
She also is the best dog I have ever owned. She is fun and very dedicated to our family. She loves kids and kids love her. She is very intelligent and easy to train because she just wants to please us.
I have trained several dogs over the years. I have been training Roxi since she came home to be with us. It is such a joy when we can go for walks together and she obeys my voice. So far Roxi comes, sits, stays, heels and lays down on command.
I think it is important to train a dog. It makes life with them more enjoyable and it keeps them safe. It only takes fifteen minutes a day and it is a great investment in the life of your dog.
