There are many health issues dogs seem to have concerning their ears.
Sometimes these health problems can be minor like a little bit of wax buildup in
the outer skin or inner ear or they can be more serious problems like a very bad
ear infection. Depending on what problems your dog may be having the
symptoms can range to anything from an annoying itchy ear to having parasitic
issues (ear mites) in the inner eardrum or ear canal.
In general the most popular dog ear problem is otitis externa which is just a fancy
way of saying an infection or inflammation of the external ear canal. Many times
owners make the problem worse by treating their dog’s ear with
problematic substances like ear cleaners that just don't work or by being too
forceful or even cleaning their ears with Q-tips.
You'll want to monitor your dog’s behavior concerning their ears. Check
their hearing for one. Make sure to see how sensitive their ears and hearing are.
You can do this by making subtle sounds while they are sleeping to see if they
respond. You can also see how sensitive their ears are by petting their heads or
the top of their ears. Dog ear care is imperative to making sure your dog does not
suffer needlessly. You'll also want to see if they shake their heads or scratch their
ears on a consistent basis. Also you should be aware of dog ear problems if you
live in humid climates or if you have other dogs (or if your dog is exposed to other
animals) who might have any range of health problems themselves. If your dog
has long pendulous ears you'll want to monitor their ear health closely or even if
they love to swim a lot. Wetness in their ears that does not get dried out can
cause infection in the inner ear canal. Also you'll want to monitor how your
dog’s ear smells. A buildup of wax or canine ear infections can have a
rather pungent smell. There are special dog ear medicines and dog ear drops or
antibiotics that can be prescribed from your local vet in the event that your dog
has a severe inner ear infection. Again if you see any of these signs, you'll want to
take your dog to your local veterinarian immediately and he’ll recommend
to you the best protocol for great dog ear care.
If your dog has an ear infection or clogged ear, it can be very difficult for them to
enjoy their lives. To get effective treatment for ear infections or smelly dog ears,
you should checkout our latest products and see your local vet. Don't let your pup
suffer one more day. They have to rely on your for help! They can't speak for
themselves. Keeping great dog ear health is vtially important.
Now let's take a look at some ideas of what you can do in order to restore the
health of your dogs ears! Most of the time these ear problems can be recurring so
you'll want to get on regular program for getting on top of this kind of infection or
problem. You can use tweezers to pluck some of the hair from the inside of the
ear away in order to let more air get into the ear itself. Dog hair can prevent air
and oxygen from allowing the wax and organisms to dry out. Then after you do
that you can flush the ear out with some commercial ear wax cleaners from your
local vet about once a week. Don't use cotton tip Q-tips on your dog. Just like in
humans this can actually push wax further down into the ear. And just like in
humans the skin in the inner ear is very sensitive and can actually be scratched
causing ear infections and organisms like parasites or ear mites to be able to
grow. We also do not recommend using alcohol because this dries out the ear
too much and can cause great pain if the inner ear is scratched in any way.
Please take the time to monitor your dog’s ear care and ear health on a
regular basis. Doing so will save you time and money and in this economy we can
use all the money we can get!
