Located in the South American country of Uruguay the capital of Montevideo is home to over 1.3 million residents. With such a large population and being the largest city in Uruguay, there is much to see and do in this vibrant city.
When getting around you have the options of bus, taxi or rental cars. All options of travel are cheap and efficient. Once you reach Uruguay you will see that this is an old city, with small and charming museums, and is not overrun by tourists. Another thing you may notice is for such a big city there are only a few skyscrapers that dominate the sky line.
If you want to see where Guiseppe Garibaldi, a 19th century Italian hero hid in exile for years, then you want to check the Casa Garibaldi. The Casa Rivera is the National Historical Museum that houses furniture, paintings, documents and artifacts that tell the story of indigenous Uruguayan history all the way to their independence. This museum is actually spread out into 5 different houses, with the main being the former home of Fructuoso Rivera - the first Uruguayan president. Museo Torres García is another museum that has a collection of art from Torres García the Uruguyan painter and also contains artwork from other contemporary artists.
While in Montevideo you will see that the people have great pride in their land and history. Plaza Independencia located in the middle of the old city and is a large square lined with beautiful palm trees with a colossal statue paying homage to José Artigas the city's greatest hero. Visitors are allowed to pay their respect by going to the tomb located underground. One building that would be impossible not to see is the Palacio Salvo created by Italian architect Mario Palanti. This magnificent building was once the tallest building in Montevideo. The architecture and design is a mix of neo-romanticism, gothic and classical influences - you can take free elevator ride to the top that will give you breathtaking views of the city.
For a bit of shopping, food and entertainment head over to the Mercado del Puerto. The Mercado del Puerto is like an indoor maze where you will find artists and street musicians. You can purchase books, crafts, souvenirs, clothing and other wares. If you love meat you will love the mouth-watering delicacies of Uruguayan cuisine. In this market you can gorge on steak and chicken, try spicy sausage (húngaras) or enjoy a variety of meats (parillada). With your meal have a sangria or medio y medio, a white wine mixed with sparkling wine.
Montevideo has a very pleasant year-round climate, so any month of the year that you choose to visit will be great.
