Researchers have found the association of wine and esophageal cancer. According to their studies conducted recently, wine consumption is found to lower the risk of getting barrett’s esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus is nothing but a pre cancerous condition affecting the esophagus’s lower region. In order to identify the changes which lead to esophageal cancer, researchers analyzed the dietary practices followed by people in association with the esophageal cancer development. It was found that people who consumed white or red wine regularly (moderate quantities) had lowered barrett’s esophagus risk. The wine’s protective effect against barrett’s esophagus was more in people who consumed one or two glasses alone everyday. It was also found that people who consumed beer and more than three glasses of wine did not have the same protection against barrett’s esophagus. This makes the association of wine and esophageal cancer very clearly.

Barrett’s esophagus is a condition that affects nearly five percent of the total population and it occurs due to acid reflux or heartburn resulting in the damage of the esophagus’s lining permanently. People who are affected with barett’s esophagus are prone to adenocarcinoma (one of the esophageal cancer type) and the incidence is thirty to forty time more when compared with normal people.

Kaiser Permanente Study was conducted on 953 women and men located at Northern part of California. Researchers found out those persons who consumed one or two glasses of white or red wine everyday were fifty six percent prone to barrett’s esophagus development. It was also found out by researchers that those who drank liquor or beer did not have the protect effect which the wine created. But researchers did not know or were sure of which factor of wine lowered the risk of developing barrett’s esophagus. Many suggested that it was due to the presence of antioxidants which neutralized the damage caused by GERD or gastroesphageal reflux disease. Or they thought that since wine drinkers consumed wine when they had their food, the damaging effects of alcohol consumption might be reduced and in turn reduced the damage caused to the esophageal tissues.

The Kaiser permanete study conducted by Corley not only studied the link between wine and esophageal cancer but also studied the link between abdominal obesity and cancer and the effects of vegetable, fruits and dietary antioxidants consumption. Researchers came to a conclusion that people who ate a minimum of eight servings of vegetables and fruits everyday and who maintained their body weight to the normal had lower risk of getting barrett’s esophagus and in turn lower risk of esophageal cancer.
