Kenya is a country struggling to draw tourist back. After the 2008 post election riots, which destroyed its tourist industry, the country is literally fighting to get back to its former glory. Kenya is one of the best places in Africa to go on safari, with Tsavo National Park home to a whole host of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants and wildebeest. Kenya is also rated one of the top five bird-watching destinations in the world.
Although most holidaymakers will come to this awesome place for safari alone, there are many other adventures to be had. From Kakamega’s rainforests, Indian Ocean beaches and the rolling grasslands of the Masai Mara, Kenya is simply stunning to say the least.
Packages including safari are a particular bargain right now, although if you’d prefer to organise your holiday separately, the accommodation and travel fares are also very well priced. For the cheaper deals, try to avoid staying in Nairobi or along the coast, and head for lesser-known spots. Although it’s not nice to harp on about bargains, especially in a country where the cost of living is already so very reasonable, it is of course an opportunity for us Brit’s to explore such a dynamic land without breaking the bank.
Kenya, like most African countries, requires you to have proof of vaccination, so make sure you ask your doctor for a Certificate of Vaccination (also known as the yellow booklet), before traveling. It’s worth remembering that some vaccines can take as long as two weeks to become effective so don’t leave visiting your doctor until the last minute. It’s a good idea to plan your vaccines four to eight weeks prior to departure.
If you are going on safari the best time to see the wildlife is in January and February. This is when the weather is at its hottest and driest and the animals are easy to spot.
During June to October is when the annual wildebeest migration occurs, from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Most holidaymakers choose to avoid the period between March and the end of May, as the wildlife is harder to see and the mosquitoes are out in force. For the best deal, steer clear of planning your holiday around Christmas or Easter.
Kenya will no doubt become more expensive again, over time, once tourism begins flooding back. Now however, it is an extremely viable holiday destination that should not be missed. Whether you want to soak up the sun while lazing on golden sands, trek through the rainforest or take a jeep safari, Kenya can offer it all. Take heed of the advice given before you travel and during your trip and this extraordinary country will take your breath away.
