Passengers
A big distraction for teen drivers is having unruly passengers in the car with them. It is distracting when someone is jumping around, dancing or yelling out the window. This can also occur when the driver permits a large group of people into the car, especially when there are more people than available seats. These types of instances can result in distractions to the driver and an accident.
Seatbelts
A teen driver should always make passengers put on their seatbelt before starting out. Impress upon the young driver the safety and importance of making all passengers wear their seatbelts and tell them the risk factors of not making their friends wear one. Make sure there are enough seatbelts available for all passengers and that they are all in good working condition.
Cell Phones
Cell phone use and texting is becoming one of the biggest problems for teen drivers today. Most of them feel that they can maintain good control over their vehicles when using the cell phone and don't see this as a safety issue. This is false and young drivers need to become aware of that. Parents need to set rules for their child, making the child aware of the consequences of using a cell phone while driving. This can be done by having the child sign a contract with the parent, promising that there will be no cell phone use or texting while driving.
Emergencies
There are benefits to a teen driver having a cell phone. It is beneficial to have all the pertinent numbers listed in the contact list of people to be called in an emergency. Aside from the parent, list phone numbers for the police, a towing company, and any adult who may be able to provide assistance.
Road Incidents
Some young drivers can be caught in unsafe situations with no fault of their own. The car may break down, have a flat tire or they may be involved in an accident. The teen should be made aware of how to handle these types of situations. They should know how to change a tire and they should know the steps to take when involved in an accident.
