Using Home Drug Tests - Handling Disputed Results of a Home Drug Test Kit

Parents don't want to make false accusations against their children. They also don't want to think their children aren't using drugs, if they are.
If you've been using home drug test kits to prevent the signs of drug use or symptoms of drug use in your teen and you get a home drug test that indicates drug use, you might be wondering what to do if your teen disputes the results. Don't be surprised if your teen tells you the kits are defective, that they inhaled second hand smoke, and didn't use the drugs themselves. They might give you one of several other common excuses too. There's an easy way to handle this situation, without a bunch of unnecessary drama or conflict.
Simply offer to have a GCMS confirmation test performed by a certified lab and follow through. A GCMS test is a special type of drug test that you should request for confirmation purposes. It's the same kind of test that is used in employment situations when jobs are on the line line and results are being contested in court.
If your teen isn't taking prescription medications that could trigger a positive result, you may want to encourage your teen "come clean" because you will be even more upset if you find out AFTER confirmation testing that they continued to lie about their usage. As a further incentive to "come clean" you may wish to insist that your teen pay for additional testing if the results don't come back clean.
Why is it a good idea to offer confirmation testing? It's not probable, but it is possible that poppy seeds, cold medications, and even some antibiotics in VERY high doses can cause false-positive results on certain types of tests. This is by FAR, the exception rather than the rule. However, it is still important that you don't make the mistake of accusing your teen of drug use if your teen hasn't done anything wrong.
When teens know that you are going to confirm the sample in question (and not wait a few days for another test and give their body more time to clear the evidence of drug use from their bodies), guilty teens will usually admit their usage making further confirmation unnecessary. When GCMS confirmation tests are performed at labs and they verify the results of the home drug test kit or teens come forward and admit their usage, then the concern of making a false accusation is virtually eliminated. Feel free to make your assertion after the results have been confirmed.
If you want to know more about using home drug tests or picking out the best home drug test kit for your teen, or the steps to starting a home drug testing program, additional information like program checklists, counselor approved strategies and free video tutorials are available online.
