As people walk near a portion of a large estate that has been transformed into a garden, they seem to be impelled to follow the flagstone path leading into the flora. Gently the trail bends around boxwood hedges and twists its way back and forth between rows of rose bushes. In this kind of setting, part of what appeals to the eye is the natural elements, the stone and the plants, but also the curve of the trail. A curve is a very common theme in the natural world. Further, natural settings tend to have a calming and refreshing affect on the human mind. Therefore, having a curved pathway is often more inviting than a straight one.
Most people do not have large estates, neither do they have unlimited time or resources. However the ability to create an appealing curved garden trail is within the reach of many. Lovely and tranquil garden spots are a boon to any home.
Making such a trail need not be a difficult or overwhelming task. A garden trail can be constructed in a very small area and in a short period of time. Once a site has been selected, a simple rope can be used to outline where the path is going to run. If possible, design the path to be 40 inches wide as this adds to the natural look. Also, an enlarged trail termination is an inviting feature. Following the rope as a guide, dig a shallow channel all along where the edge of the path will be. Install bender board in the channel, and then fill the path area with crushed gravel. (An alternate option is to put down large stones or pavers surrounded by sand or gravel.) After the path is complete, planting can begin. Start with groundcover, locating it near the path. Groundcover plants can be planted within one foot of the path. As the plants mature they will overflow onto the path giving a natural feel. Next, outside of the groundcover, plant some taller filler plants. Finally, on the outside edge of the planting area, place tall background plants. Other plants often featured in this kind of setting are plants that give off fragrances. These plants will add enticing aromas to the visual appeal of any planted area. In several months the garden will begin to take on its full potential.
Yes, an inviting garden path is well within the reach of most people. With some advanced planning, a little money, and a little work, such a garden can become a reality in just a weekend.
