Trying to stay motivated to lose weight is an ongoing struggle for many people. Being over-weight increases the chances of heart problems, stroke, diabetes, and numerous other health problems. So why is it so hard to stay motivated to diet when you know it's so important?

One reason, of course, is old habits are hard to break. When you've always eaten a certain kind of food (and those of you from the south know what I mean) or you've always snacked while you watched television it's hard to change. You have to be strongly motivated to break those patterns.

Here's the secret: Only you can choose what your motivators will be. The doctor can warn you of health risks, your mother or spouse can comment on your appearance, your health insurance company can put you in a high risk category and increase your rates. But nothing will change unless the motivation comes from inside you.

The most effective motivators are the ones YOU choose.

What's most important to you?

• Active time with your children

• Living a long healthy life so you can babysit the grandchildren

• Wearing clothes that make you feel good about yourself

• Showing your kids a healthier way to live

When you've picked your motivators write them down. Put them somewhere you'll see them every day. They'll be a constant reminder of what you're working towards. Spend a few minutes everyday focusing on this list. Don't just read it - live it.

Imagine yourself wearing a smaller size in jeans and then, an even smaller size. Think of how you'll feel in the store when you buy those jeans. How you'll look wearing them.

Think of being able to take a long walk and not feeling tired or winded. Think of spending a day at Disney World and being able to keep up with your children.

Let all your senses get involved. Smell the new perfume you're going to buy yourself when you lose 10 pounds. Feel the warmth of the sand when you finally feel confident enough to wear a bathing suit again and go to the beach. Imagine the day at the spa you'll treat yourself with when you reach your ideal weight.

Don't waste time feeling guilty. It saps your energy and makes it even harder to stay motivated. If you mess up, then do better next time. Positive thoughts combined with action will bring results.

Let the motivators that you choose keep you on your path to weight loss.
