Are you fond of riding bikes in groups? You must have bike racks. They make transportation of bicycles easy and convenient. You can choose roof racks. You can carry up to 5 bikes with certain models. They are also ideal for light bikes and lowered cars. Read on to see what rack is ideal for your car.
Bike racks are used to carry bicycles, especially multiple. The bicycles are securely fastened to the car bike racks. In turn, the racks are attached securely to the car. In buying a bike rack, considerations such as its type, budget and load capacity are taken.
Also important are the frequency of using the rack, and your ability to take off-wheels for certain racks. Experts advise to analyze the rack’s security and special applications. There are many types of bike racks available in the market.
There is a trunk rack. It is the least expensive type of bike rack. The most that it can carry is three bicycles. A Strap rack, its other name, must have a minimum of 4 straps to secure it to the car. However, there are also strap bike racks that have 6 straps, for better security.
Trunk racks are only ideal for light weight bicycles. If you take a long trip on the road, it is better to make few stops to check your bikes and rack. Also, you cannot get into the trunk, rear door or hatch of your car with a trunk track, when bikes are already loaded.
Trunk racks has a variation, and it is called spare tire rack. A spare tire rack is a trunk-style rack that is attached to the spare tire mounted on the rear of a small SUV, jeep or van. It requires secure attachment and has a two-bike capacity.
Another type of bike rack is the hitch rack. Hitch racks are the most flexible bike carrier. There are models that can carry from 2 to 5 bikes. They are mounted to a special mount naturally found on the frame of your car. With a hitch rack, no bike is found on the trunk, no pedals are bumping into your license plate and you can open the trunk of your car even when bikes are already mounted.
In most models though, you cannot open the rear door of your SUV, the hatchbacks and van without first removing the bikes. Nonetheless, newer models, called swing away allow you to swing the bikes away from the vehicle so you can have access to the interior portion of your car.
What makes a hitch rack a cumbersome is a need for a receiver. A receiver, which is a square-shaped tow, is where a hitch rack is mounted. The tow needs to be installed into your car. Receivers come in measurement and model to prevent damage to your vehicle and to avoid voiding your car’s warranty.
Roof racks are the most expensive bike racks. They need specific adapters for each car roof to fit a certain car. A roof rack is ideal for light bikes and for lowered cars. It is not recommended for tall and heavy bicycles and tall SUVs.
There are many styles of bicycle mounts; some require removal of wheels. If your car is normal size and has a tandem or recumbent, roof bike racks are your only choice. The capacity to carry several bikes depends on your car’s construction and space on the roof.
