We have heard a lot about toddler scooters lately, and while they cannot travel fast on their scooters, it can still be very dangerous for little ones who are not properly protected.

One wrong fall going down a very small hill can be very dangerous if your child is not wearing a proper fitting helmet. Just because the three year old is closer to the ground, does not mean they would not be hurt when falling off their scooter, especially considering how un-coordinated most scooter riding toddlers are.

Safety riding a scooter is very important, especially with the toddler scooters since you are basically putting your little one on wheels and letting them go on their merry way down the walkway.

First off, for all kids regardless of age, a scooter helmet is an absolute must. No excuses, no quick scoot without the helmet on, they climb on the scooter, they wear a helmet. If they refuse to wear it, take away the scooter. Seriously, you will end up very sorry if you let your child ride a scooter without a helmet.

Next, you need to know that knee and elbow pads are strongly recommended for children under the age six riding a scooter and for any age child that is attempting to do scooter tricks, jumps or ramps. A lot like with the helmets, it only takes one little fall to end up in the emergency room.

It gets even harder in the summer time, but padding up your little ones can certainly help keep them from getting hurt in the event of a fall or spill.

It appears there is not a whole lot of scooter safety gear specifically designed for use with scooters.

However, there are tons of bicycle helmets on the market that are perfect for your child when riding their scooters. In addition, you can use roller blade and roller skate knee and elbow pads that may also help keep them safe.

Always remember, safety first!

Before you buy a helmet, first measure their head. The simplest way is to take a string or thread and wrap it around their head from front to back of their skull at the widest point, and then place the measured string on a tape measure to get the proper measurement. Every kids head is different, so do not assume that a helmet for a toddler will fit YOUR toddler.

Measure - Measure - Measure.

I have found that some four-year-old children will need an infant size helmet and some three-year-old child's head will fit best in a young adult sized helmet.

Only after an exact measurement should you order a helmet for your child. It must fit their head properly or it will not be safe.
