Laptop repairs are a big growth industry and a laptop repair course is a great way to get up to speed. These days, more and more people are buying laptops as opposed to desktops and the demand for repairs goes up each year.

What To Look For

Any good laptop course should cover all the main areas of laptop repair. These include learning how to repair and/or replace the following main parts: keyboard, battery, power supply, screen and hard drive.

Do not consider a course that is biased towards one particular brand of laptop. Competition between manufacturers to produce ever smaller and ever faster models means that one model can be quite different from another. Any good course should give you exposure to at least a couple of main brands e.g. Dell, HP.

Do not do a course where the only models that are demonstrated are home consumer models. This would mean potentially missing out on high paying corporate work due to a lack of experience.

Local Courses

One place to find a laptop repair course is at your local educational training establishment. These days it is not difficult to find evening courses as many people who take such courses are transitioning between careers and do not have much free time.

The advantage of doing a local course is that you will gain real, hands-on experience of repairing laptops. No matter how much theory you learn, repairing laptops is essentially a vocational skill and there is no substitute for such hands-on experience.

Self-Study

The other alternative is to do self-study.

You can start for free by visiting manufacturer support websites and downloading manuals and technical diagrams. Whilst different manufacturers will have a different design philosophy, there is usually some continuity between different models for the same manufacturer.

For example, Dell computers have always been highly modular, even their desktops are like this. Even if you work on repairing only a single Dell laptop, it will put you in good stead for the next time you see a Dell that needs repairing, regardless of the model.

Although books are always a good way of learning any subject, recently training companies have started to introduce video lessons. Although not allowing you to get hands-on yourself, these are frankly the next best option available to you.
