In urinary incontinence, one absolutely and completely loses the sensation that one has to go to the bathroom. Other persons blame food and drinks in having urinary continence but one may also develop overflow incontinence from habit. It usually happens to shift teachers, doctors, shift workers, and truck drivers. Other reason of incontinence is stress, urges and medical complications. There are many ways to treat urinary incontinence; one must just look for the appropriate one to suit his urinary problem.
In urinary incontinence, the fastest way to prevent urine from flowing everywhere is through a diaper or an adult diaper. However, it must be emphasized that an adult diaper is not the only cure to incontinence; the following are the ways of treating incontinence.
One way is through Bladder retraining and Kegel exercise. This is made by regaining control over one’s bladder in order to minimize the incontinence. In this way, the technique is squeezing the right muscles and putting therein the right amount of pressure; when I say muscle it means the pelvic muscles. In doing this, the bladder will be controlled again and the person will have command on when the urine will be held or discharged.
Another way to treat incontinence is through medicines for overactive bladder. A bladder is overactive when it secretes urine frequently. Medicines can really cure incontinence, but one must be careful of the medicine he will take as it may possibly worsen the incontinence. Some medicines like anticholinergics help the bladder muscles relax and also it prevents spasms in the bladder. However, anticholinergics have side effects. It includes constipation, drowsiness, confusion, fast heartbeat, dry mouth, and blurry vision. No matter what medicine to take, consent of the doctor must always be obtained.
Another treatment of urinary incontinence is through the injection of collagen and carbon spheres, these are called bulking agents. The doctor injects the bulking agents in the urethra or the bladder to make the tissues thicker in order to reduce the incontinence. Please bear in mind that this operation is not just sticking a needle in one’s stomach. The procedure begins through series of test to determine any skin disorder, allergies, medical history and other factors. Thereafter, local anesthesia or sedation is injected before the injection of the bulking agents.
Last, but not the least, urinary incontinence may also be remedied through the use of catheters. This is resorted to when one’s bladder is continually overflowing or the bladder cannot empty itself because of poor muscle contraction. A catheter is a tube that is inserted in one’s urethra to the bladder to make a way where the urine will pass. The other end of the tube possesses a bag where the urine will all be deposited. The good thing about catheters is that one can dispose of the bag if it is already full and thereafter, replace it with a new one. The disadvantage is it is slightly painful, uncomfortable and may even cause urinary tract infections.
Other treatment includes biofeed back, neuromodulation, vaginal devices like "pessary", and surgery of the bladder, urethra or the vagina.
