We are only human. And because of that, we often tend to look for quick solutions to many problems. For women experiencing the pain of sciatica during pregnancy, a fast solution is important. This IS possible, provided all of the necessary steps are followed. But many women suffering back pain during their pregnancy fail to remove their pain completely because they fail to follow a simple step-by-step approach.

The first step is pinpointing the causes of the back pain. Then, and only then, the process of removing ALL the causes of your pain can begin. If this isn't done correctly, you may experience temporary relief, only to risk having the pain return. This is the biggest reason why people remain in pain and fail at treating sciatica.

The other reason why people return to pain is that they use pain as the only indicator of sciatica. They reason that since the pain has subsided, then the problem of sciatica has been properly treated. Not true. Pain is only an indication that the problem has become bad enough to finally take measures to relieve it.

Pain should be recognized as an internal alarm. It should be considered a "green light" to act now and deal with the problem. Just because the alarm is turned off doesn't mean all the "fires" have gone. Other methods should be used to monitor your progress to make sure all the causes have gone, not just the back pain.

Again, the very first step is to find the causes of your pain. Failure to find the exact cause or causes and you are more likely to make your sciatica much worse. This is probably the most common step that people ignore and will account for most of the poor results of sciatica relief.

However, finding the cause doesn't mean finding out whether or not you have correct posture. Knowing if you are sitting, standing, bending or lifting correctly doesn't get to the root of the cause. It also isn't knowing you have tight muscles, weak muscles and poor joint movement.

Sometimes, the causes are the improper alignment(s) in your spine that force the muscles and joints to stress and/or become imbalanced. But the important part is knowing what caused the improper alignment

Now, for pregnant women, the first thing to consider, and most common cause is your developing baby. The baby's head often compresses against the mother's spine causing the nerves to pinch. There are other patterns and causes that you need to know about, and this is what your care giver or doctor should rule out...such as a herniated disc. This must be done in order to effectively target your sciatica relief.

Your pregnancy is most likely the main reason for the nerve compression problem for the following reasons:

  1. Alignment changes of the vertebrae caused by the uterus. This causes the spinal canal to narrow.

  2. Swelling of the soft tissue surrounding the nerves.

If you're pregnant and experiencing low back pain, there is a special technique that quickly addresses the main cause of pain and is only recommended for sciatica pain associated with pregnancy. The technique was recently discovered and developed by a doctor. It's a technique that involves what's referred to as gentle therapy or "gentle moves". It is non-invasive and so gentle that it is not even considered massage or chiropractic manipulation. I cannot even begin to fully explain this technique here, so I've created a link to the doctor's site which can provide more detailed information on this fascinating technique
