Hydro Seeding - what is it?

Hydro seeding is a grass planting process. This process is fast, efficient, and economical. The process is more effective than conventional seeding and more economical than conventional turf. The process begins by preparing a batch of material consisting of mulch, seed, fertilizer and water. The batch of material is mixed in the tank of a Hydro seeding machine, and then pumped from the tank and sprayed onto the ground. After being sprayed onto the soil, the material appears as a green foam or soil coating. The mulch material enhances initial growth by providing a micro-environment beneficial to seed germination. The mulch holds the seed in place on the ground and helps hold moisture in the soil. Mulch also moderates the impact of raindrop impact.

Where is it used?

Hydromulching came around in the 1950’s and shortly became a popular method for growing grass or for erosion control. The process was soon after adopted in the U.K. in the 1960’s and is now the second most widely process for laying a new lawn. In Australia the state and federal governments have been using Hydromulching as a form of erosion control for many years and has also been used in parts of the world such as the Panama Canal as an erosion control program. Today Hydromulching has become increasing popular in new home development as a cost effective alternative option to laying turf.

How it works?

The process begins by preparing a batch of material consisting of mulch, (a product made from organic cellulose), seed, fertilizer, and water. The products are mixed in a hydro-mulching machine, and then pumped from the tank, and sprayed onto the ground. After being sprayed onto the prepared soil, the material appears as a green layer, or soil coating. The hydro-mulch material performs a number of different functions which are the keys to the success of this process. As the mulch dries, it forms a micro-environment protecting the seed bed from the elements. It moderates the impact of rain drops, provides erosion resistance, and most importantly, in dry or drought conditions reduces moisture evaporation from the soil.

An area that has been hydroseeded and properly watered will start to grow in about 7 - 10 days. Under normal conditions, the new lawn will be well established in 4-6 weeks.

Purchasing turf is expensive, even if you know how to lay it yourself. If you can't lay it yourself, the labour charges make turf extremely expensive. Hydroseed will cost 50%-80% less than turf and give you an equally beautiful lawn.

Hydroseeded grass starts out in the soil you place it in- it is not subjected to transplant shock that can occur when your soil is different from the original soil the turf was grown in. What to expect?

Before an area can be sprayed a top soil of around 100mm needs to be laid and levelled even. A Green Lifestyle Concepts qualified hydro spray will visit your property and mix up the Hydromulch slurry to the exact requirements of your property. When the mixture is ready it can be applied to the area and on average an area no larger than 500 meters square should take no more than one to two hours. If watered correctly you should see the grass start to grow within 7 – 10 days depending on the current climate and weather patterns. After 4 – 6 weeks the grass will be starting to look thick and is now ready for mowing. With repeated watering and small trims you will notice the grass becoming stronger, bushier and healthier.

Care and maintenance

The success of growing grass is almost always related to water, either too much or not enough. If water is scarce, good mulch helps the soil to absorb moisture and then insulate the soil, making that moisture is available for the plant as long as possible. Soil moisture is the key to germination and initial growth. If too much water comes at one time, such as heavy rains or too much watering, the seed must be held in place. Good mulch is an erosion resistant material, and reduces or eliminates soil erosion. Erosion control is a key function of good mulch material. Mulch can be the great water moderator, and the probability of growing grass successfully is enhanced with a good mulch application. Water an installation twice a day for at least 20 minutes, once early morning and again late afternoon or evening.
