Overview
The town, Cercedilla is situated at the northwestern part of the Madrid; it is located at 56 KM from Madrid and 36 KM from Segovia. The population in this town is around 6700. This town is easily accessible by road or by train from Madrid. The climate here is continental and this town has a good range of leisure, cultural and adventure activities that facilitate people to enjoy holiday, the time off or a weekend getaway.
Since this town is located away from Madrid which is a big city you will find that before you reach this town you are far away from the buzz of the big city and you will be at the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. You will find at the center of the town cafes, alpine style chalets, modern apartments and a small square.
History
In order to cross the mountains of Guadarama and connect Roman cities of Titulcia and Segovia the Roman road of Cercedilla was constructed.
Climate
Since this town is located in the middle of the Sierra del Guadarrama mountain range, the terrain is predominantly mountainous. It has a continental climate which means that the summer here is pleasant and winter is cold. There are frequent snowfalls.
Art and Culture
The key attraction in this city is the scenery that surrounds this place. The scenery of the Guadarrama Valley is fascinating and is very much enjoyable. One important monument that is worth seeing in this place is the main church in the town – Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián – and this church was initially medieval Romanesque and later on rebuilt after completion of the civil war.
In the Fuenfría Valley, you can take a walk from the train station into the mountains and this will lead to the Roman Road ( Calzada Romana ). You will find that there are 4 Roman bridges in this route.
Cuisine
Some of the food items popular in this place are – pork stew, chicken stew, stewed meatballs, potato omelette, baked sea bream and sea bass.
Sports and Entertainment
Cercedilla has a walker’s paradise having a variety of Sylvan trails that lead from the pine-wooded Fuenfría Valley and this is the main attraction.
Every year the following festivals are held in this town.
1.Azkena Rock Festival – is held in Vitoria-Gasteiz during summer.
2.International Music Summit – wherein DJs and music producers give interviews and lectures for music industry professionals.
Business
The inhabitants in this town mainly are engaged in commerce, farming, public services and catering. This is also a weekend getaway because of its proximity to Madrid and tourism contributes to its economy.
