Owning a well behaved dog is one of life’s greatest joys. Teaching a dog to be responsive to your wishes isn’t hard if you take a smart approach in your dog training. This article will look at four key commands that your dog should know. They can make life as a pet owner easier and help keep your dog safe.
There are two things to understand when beginning your Chihuahua Training. The first thing is that your dog really wants to please you. Secondly, learning even a little bit about how dogs think can make the training process much easier.
There is no need to be overly strict or domineering with your dog. It can be frustrating when it seems like they’re just not getting it. Just remember that they’re not trying to aggravate you. The problem is that you don’t act like a dog. It can be confusing since looking at the world from a dog’s viewpoint is all they know.
The first command that your Chihuahua should understand is "Come". Having your dog come to you when called is a must. Even a small dog with very short legs will usually be able to outrun you. Chasing and trying to catch a dog rarely works. The better way to approach this is for the dog to voluntarily come to you.
The second command in your Chihuahua Training regimen is "Sit". This command is important because it helps put the dogs mind on you. A dog sitting in front of you, intently focused on the treat that he’s about to get for "sitting", is the ultimate picture of concentration.
The third command to learn in your Chihuahua Training is "Stay". With a dog as little as a Chihuahua, there’s always the danger of being overlooked. If your dog is about to enter an area with a lot of activity, it might be better for them to "Stay" where they are. At least until you can pick them up. Stay goes hand in hand with Sit.
The fourth command that’s important for your dog to know is a command to enter. You may want them to enter the door of a building, a crate or any other number of things. A commonly used command word for this is "Kennel". This is especially good for crate training your dog, but can be used as a general "enter" word.
The big question now that we know which commands to give is how to get the dog to do them. For starters, reward good behavior and ignore bad behavior. The two strongest urges in a dog’s makeup are food and sex. Rewarding good behavior with a delicious treat reinforces the idea that following your commands is a good idea. Just remember that delicious treats run a distant second to the urge to procreate. It’s Natures way to insure the survival of the species.
Understanding this aspect of your dog’s nature will greatly help you in your Chihuahua Training. Spaying or neutering your pet can help them be more responsive to your wishes. It also helps reduce unnecessary suffering among unwanted offspring.
Using these four commands in your dog training will make for both happier owners and dogs.
