Dialect coach promises British accent perfection for anyone with innovative new technique.
‘Excuse me’ said the young English language student to the Bobby patrolling Soho in London ‘how do I get to Lay-Kester Square? ‘Sorry?’ came the answer. The young man repeated his question, giving the odd pronunciation of the famous Soho location another version: ’Oh, I mean Lay-Chester-Square.’
It was probably then that the police officer realized the man meant to ask how he could get to one of London’s most famous spots:Leicester Square. ‘Walk right down this street and ‘LES-TER SQUARE’ will be right in front of you.’Slightly bewildered the man thanked the officer and went on his way.
English pronunciation has always been a major challenge to the majority of non natives. Many languages are pronounced exactly as they are spelt. Much to the chagrin of learners around the world, English is not one of them, as the above anecdote shows.
Why do countless students of English battle with accent problems, even years after they started learning English? We ask professional dialect coach Michael E. Andrews.
‘The overwhelming majority of English learners around the globe learn English from teachers that are themselves non native English speakers. They pass their often inaccurate pronunciation patterns on to those students.’When working on pronunciation, more and more English learners opt for the British accent. They feel that the pronunciation is clearer and easier to understand. ‘They like it because it gives the language an air of sophistication, almost James Bond style’ he chuckles.
Michael E. Andrews has years of experience coaching people how to speak in different accents, especially the Standard British English. He has taught countless English students of all ages and professions from almost every country in the world. He then went on to use his very special skills to coach actors all over the USA, from New York’s Broadway to California’s Hollywood. He goes on to explain that anyone can learn to speak with a perfect Standard British accent, regardless of their nationality.
With the never ending demand for accent coaching in the Standard British accent Michael E. Andrews decided to make his work accessible to anyone. ‘I wanted to put together a course that caters for all levels and explains everything in clear terms that both actors and everyday people can understand. There has never been a course available that was specifically written for all the types of learners, that is accessible, and delivers knowledge in a short time with extremely high results. Most importantly there has never been a course that covers English the way it is spoken today, with a modern pronunciation.’
Michael E. Andrews is a professional dialect coach who has created a new course which promises to help anyone speak with a perfect British accent. The course is called ‘How to learn the British accent- fast: the MSBEA Course’.
