Pipeline welding jobs, like other welding jobs, have a level of danger involved. It requires you to be focused. The pipes that you weld will be scrutinized by welding inspectors, so you must weld those pipes to the best of your ability at all times.
Pipeline welding jobs are done in many different areas. It includes many indoor and outdoor environments. Pipe welders are also exposed to various weather conditions while at work. This adds a far greater challenge while you work if conditions aren't fair. To top it off, you will usually be working for many hours at a time.
Welders partake in many types of processes to ensure that the metals are joined. Certain welding jobs will benefit more from one process than another. For most pipeline welding jobs, the Stick welding and Tig welding methods are employed.
You have the pipe welding positions. In most cases, your welding on those pipes will be limited to the positions, which you have attained certifications to weld. In welding, the position of the pipe to be welded, is what is referred to as the pipe welding position. There are four positions and these are 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G. Yes, that rules out the existence of positions 3G and 4G for pipes.
Starting with the most complex position, the 6G position entails having the pipe placed at an angle, which is usually at forty five degrees. The pipe doesn't move during a 6G welding operation. The 5G pipe welding position has the pipe fixed (doesn't move or rotate during welding operation) horizontally. In the 2G pipe welding position, the pipe is vertically placed, and it is also fixed so it doesn't move during the welding process. Lastly, the 1G pipe welding position has the pipe horizontal and rolled. It is like the 5G position except that the pipe isn't fixed.
Pipeline welding jobs can make you the most money when you can pipe weld in the 6G position. You make significantly more money than being only certified in the other positions. 6G welding combines all of the other four welding positions, which makes it the toughest to master. It also means that a 6G certified welder can handle 5G, 2G, and the 1G welding positions of the pipe. Welders partaking in pipeline welding jobs have earned close to six figures in their first year welding.
Depending on how the pipe is placed, pipeline welding jobs will have you welding at many angles in all sorts of postures. Is the hard work that these pipe welding jobs give out to you, worth it in the long run? It is definitely worth it when your welds can consistently pass inspection. It will take a bit of practice to get there, but it is definitely worth it when you do. Why not get into 6G pipeline welding jobs and see how much you can make?
