Is there a difference on how you celebrate Father's Day between you and your Dad?

Did you ever compare how you and your Father celebrated Father's Day? In the Philippines, where I come from, Father's Day celebration had come a long way. During my Dad's time, it is not popular. It only started to gain its popularity when the then President Corazon Aquino supported Mother's Day in the Philippines. Since then Father's Day became popular as well. When the Internet became available in the Philippines it even increased its popularity.

When my Father was still alive, I do not recall we ever did celebrated Father's Day. But I do remember every year during October 1, my Dad and all of my father's sisters meet all together in our Grandmother's house in Vinzons, Camarines Norte, Bicol, a province in the Southern Eastern part of the Philippines. They did this in honor of our Grandfather's death anniversary. To me, this is the day my Dad celebrated Father's day. My father has six other sisters, he is the only son by the way, so on this special day, every member of the family come together including their children. It is a huge family and it is fun to be able to meet all your relatives. We are a happy family you can say that. Each year one family takes care of providing the food and prepares all the requirements for the ceremony.

The table is full of fruits, Chinese dishes, and sweets. The elders are playing cards, children are playing and the others are laughing. Then we all walk together to our Grandfather's grave to pay respect and offer prayers. This is a time to bring back good memories of our Grandfather. We all then get back to our Grandma's house and start eating. It is a big party; we are all dressed up properly. This one thing I can not forget. There is always a family picture taking. Later on, I realized this is a very important piece of remembering the past. It was a perfect souvenir of a happy family.

What is good about this family get together? The most important is it gives closer family bonding. Years later, when my Father died, my Aunts help us to get up and help me finish my College education. What about now? How do we celebrate Father's Day? With the advent of New Technology and the Global media in our finger tips, Father's Day is celebrated just like in the United States of America.

The most common method is giving a gift of gifts to the Father. Here are the ten most common gifts : Electronics Greeting Cards - Via Internet email; personalized gift like a new necktie, belt, watch or shoes, a ticket for a live concert or live game of his favorite sports, a dinner in a fine restaurant, watching movie together, health tips books, a Travel Tour package, a digital camera, a new cell phone and a gift certificate so he can purchase with his own choice.

In summary, what are the differences between now and before? The main difference is the type of gift we give today compared before. Today, we celebrate it according to what we read and what we see from the media. What is common good about these two practices? It is the bonding and caring that you spent with your Dad and that is what Father's Day is all about. Give your Father his due respect and love.

May you have a Happy Father's Day together!
