In government service in USA, there are various levels known as GS and usually ranking between GS 15 and GS 1 into which the federal positions are generally divided. This has been defined by the schedule of the federal government. And these divisions or ranks are determined by educational qualifications and experience.

However when you apply for SES which includes GS 16 to GS 18 levels or in short the top notch high end jobs in the government, you require a rather different, tricky and very intricate kind of resume known as SES resume. This difficult to compose SES resume is very different from the kinds of ordinary résumés that are required for applying to GS 1 to GS 15 levels.

That is why many applicants choose to hire the services of experienced, talented and great SES resume writers.

What type of federal positions SES resume is used for?

Usually it is seen that there are 4 types of appointments and two different kinds of SES positions for which one can use a SES resume.

If you seek a limited emergency appointment or a limited term appointment or a non career appointment or a career appointment, then you can fill any general position as long as you fall amongst the senior executive service appointees.

The American law defines a career reserved position as a designation that can "ensure impartiality or public’s confidence of impartiality of government". Career appointments are sought to fill these slots.

Now, these career appointments are of 2 types – reserved or general category. Agency performance evaluations determine the selection process of candidates. Only those candidates can apply who possess the requisite qualifications that an oversight board has approved and which the OPM has convened.

The OPM approves a few non career appointments on a case by case basis. Those who apply through non career appointments (of course OPM approved) cannot apply to more than 25% posts in any SES allocation or agency as there is a ceiling. Besides, there is also another ceiling on SES positions which restricts non career appointments in SES positions to 10% only.

The limited term appointments are non renewable by nature and can be extended up to 3 years. These are usually the SES general positions. Once the job closes or the project wraps up after end, these appointments also are terminated.

The duration of limited emergency appointments is around 18 months only; they fall under the category of senior executive service general positions. Usually, because of an unanticipated need or an existing requirement, the government creates these positions.

Positions that are not covered by SES resume writing are intelligence or law enforcement jobs, judicial positions, legislative positions, administrative law judges and so on.
