Buying a cot for your newborn will be one of the biggest purchases you will make for your baby.
Your baby will sleep in a cot for a minimum of 18 months or even up to a maximum of 3 years. There are many variations of cots you could buy; this is why it can be a very confusing time for expectant parents.
You may want to think about buying a larger cot, meaning your baby will have more room, and the cot will last longer, even when your baby grows, the cot will still be large enough. However you may not have the room in the nursery for a large cot, so if you do buy a smaller cot, it will still be a perfect size for a growing baby.
You may be interested in a bedside cot? These cots have a removable side, so you are able to position the cot next to your bed, and can adjust the base, so your baby’s mattress is at the same level of yours. This can make night time feeding a lot easier.
Most variations of cots come with an adjustable base height. Meaning you can adjust it as the baby grows. You can have it set on the higher levels for the first few months so you can easily lift your baby in and out, and then you can reposition the base as the baby grows. Drop sides are also a common feature for many cots; allowing you lower one side of the cot, so you can reach your baby easily.
There are many cot beds nowadays that have removable sides. This allows the cot to be converted into a toddler sized bed, this product is popular among parents, as its practical and cost efficient. It also makes the transition from cot to toddler bed easier for your baby. Try to purchase a cot that has teething rails, as when your baby starts nibbling and sucking on the cot, teething rails won’t harm them.
Because of the amount of variety of cots, you shouldn’t have a problem choosing. When you think you have found the right cot for you and your baby, just make sure it carries the correct safety standards. These should be written on the product, so you know that the cot is completely safe for your baby.
