Are you one of the many happy people who own a dwarf hamster? Well, here are some great news for those who are new owners of these very cute pets and for existing owners who are finding it hard to care for their dwarf hamsters. Dwarf hamsters are a unique species of hamsters. Unlike the Syrian hamsters, the dwarf species are smaller, but require the same degree of care.
You see, dwarf hamsters are faster, skittish, and very delicate compared with other hamster breeds. Because of their relatively small size, they can easily fit into spaces and small cracks. Securing the homes for these funny pets is vital if you don’t want to chase them around the house.
In a native setting, hamsters usually dig into the dirt or sand. Therefore, a plastic tubular home will make your hamster feel it’s living in its natural habitat. You can set up a small to large habitat by creating their homes from ten to twenty gallon tanks. The dwarf hamsters can also be housed in safe and secured wire cages. Make sure that you also provide a small wheel where the hamsters can run everyday. The wheel will serve as their daily exercise tool since hamsters are very active creatures. Did you know that dwarf hamsters can run around 5 miles using their wheel?
Hamsters are burrowers and to satisfy their natural instincts, you can put a layer of wood shavings on the cage’s bottom. However, never use pine or cedar-based products because it can compromise the health of your pet. Replace the shavings every week. Aside from wood shavings, you can also use tissues, shredded paper, cotton, and paper towels. Try to provide a small nesting box in the cage. If you provide a small nesting box in the cage where the hamsters can build their nests, then you can enjoy watching them burrow and curl up for a nap.
Despite the small size of the dwarf hamsters, they have a monstrous appetite. In fact, these creatures can eat as much as their cousin, the larger Syrian hamster. You can feed your cute pets with vegetables, dried fruits, seeds, and pellets. Try to provide your hamsters with fresh water and food everyday.
Chew toys are needed because the teeth of hamsters grow continuously. To prevent them from chewing on the plastic parts of their cages, the chew toys can satisfy the gnawing needs of your pets. Plastic accessories can injure your precious little pets. So next time you visit the supply store, get your hamster a chewing toy.
To keep the cage odor free, we recommend washing the cage and accessories every week. You can use a light solution of soap and water to clean its cage. Make sure that the accessories are washed thoroughly. Maintaining the cleanliness of the home of your pets is very important to keep them healthy.
Once you decide to get a dwarf hamster, you should know about these care tips. Following the care tips will ensure a happy and healthy pet at home.
