Differences between managed servers and dedicated servers

Among my spent time on the web, investigating, visiting, participating, I found a constant doubt on a lot of people who wants to use a servers, they doesn't know the differences between a dedicated and a managed server. I'll try to vanish this kind of doubts by explaining what a dedicated server is, what a managed server is.

Dedicated server

In common words a dedicated server it's a server that is used for one and only one purpose which is anything that you want to assign, accomplishing by this way, to apply all resources to that desired purpose. When you have this kind of servers, you'll need to take care of your servers, this is, to give it maintenance, resolve all problems, setup the default configuration, and make all changes that you want by yourself, this gives you the advantage that only you know how and what is installed in your server, and letting you know that you're the only one who's using your servers resources and you're not sharing with other apps or users.

If you want to have a dedicated server for your own, the first thing you'll have to consider is the experience of your technicians before considering costs, if you don't have any experts, this kind of server is not for you, but if you trust in your technicians, you can do the necessary investment to get a dedicated server.

Managed server

When your technicians doesn't have the required experience to manage a server, or just when you want them to do another things that can be more important to you, and they wouldn't have time enough to dedicate to your server, you can give this responsibility to another business, dedicated to this kind of services.

A managed server it's when you give your server to a third person who can take care of, this person is the one who install the OS, firewall, setup the default configuration which you're going to be working on, some web hosting service providers can offer you a managed service, this means that you don't have to buy a physical server, they take care of all, you just need to pay a fee by month, to have a managed server is to forget all of installation issues, technicians experience and all worries about server's troubleshooting giving you enough time to focus on other activities.

When you feel ready to acquire a hosting service, remember to check the enterprise's reputation, and tech support, you don't want a hosting service who can't provide you from a tech support whenever you want it.
