Keeping yourself informed of the various nose and respiratory problems you can have will enable you to prepare for them, and even prevent them from happening in the first place. There are those who refer to ear, nose and throat doctors for help, but there are also ways for you to take care of respiratory problems by yourselves. Sinusitis, asthma and other allergic diseases are the most common respiratory problems. These are the main problems to be discussed in this article

Sinusitis

The inflamation of the sinuses is called sinusitis. This happens when the sinuses become infected with viruses, bacteria or fungi. It can also be caused by an aggravation of a different respiratory like allergies or the common cold. Symptoms include nasal congestion, post nasal drip, headache, and fever. Ear, nose and throat doctors are needed when sinusitis is chronic, or severe.

Asthma

When your airways become obstructed every now and then and you have shortness of breath, coughing and sneezing fits, you may have asthma. To better understand the condition, consult your ear, nose and throat doctor. The inflammation of the linings of the airways, or when the airways get irritated with external factors (like smoke), can produce an asthma attack. These attacks can be chronic but mild, or severe to the point of life-threatening.

Allergies

Allergies occur when an individual’s immune system overreacts to foreign bodies in one’s environment. These foreign bodies can be any of the following: dust, pollen, grass particles, a particular type of food (nuts, seafood), or smoke. You will know that you are having an allergic reaction when you begin to have rashes, itchiness, swelling, runny nose, or difficulty in breathing. An ear, nose and throat doctor can help, but there are also allergists who are much more equipped with helping you overcome your allergies.

Solutions

The nose problems mentioned above are similar to one another. That is why the solutions for them can also be grouped into one. For targeting symptoms like nasal congestion, coughing and sneezing, give your nose, sinuses and throat some relief by doing hot/warm compress – steam therapy, drinking of warm liquids, and putting a warm towel on affected areas. Oral medications like pain killers and decongestants can also relieve your symptoms temporarily. For infections, bacteria can be killed with antibiotics, while fungi should be dealt with anti fungal medications. Allergies and other inflammations can be treated with corticosteriods. Inhalers, nebulizers and other similar devices can carry cleansing and medicated solutions that are topically applied to your nose areas. Of course, you have to really understand your condition so you can apply the right treatment. If in doubt, ear, nose and throat doctors can always help. You can also get prescription medication from them.
