Gaining an Edge When Marketing on the Internet

When marketing on the internet it is natural as in any business to strive for a competitive edge. Equally natural is for online marketers to try and improve upon or be better than their competitors at doing or promoting the same thing. It seems that the best approach would be to instead establish your own unique online brand or marketing message. In doing so you are actually decreasing the amount of competition you face.

Here are 3 different strategies you can use to develop your own business brand and separate yourself from your competitors.

Better Product

Instead of going 'toe to toe' with your competition while selling the same goods and/or services consider making improvements to already existing products. By representing an improved version of something others are already promoting you now have something unique. This is a great way to establish your online brand since the product will now be associated with only you or your business. By developing other relevant products in a similar fashion you can further establish your business brand based upon this uniqueness. The more unique you can be the less competition you will have.

Improve the Process

Perhaps new product development is not your thing therefore how about considering the sales and ordering process itself. Do you see flaws or areas for improvement in the selling and/or ordering process of the competition? By focusing on these areas and developing a system that is more pleasing to online buyers you can establish a unique identity that differentiates you from your competitors. All things being equal insofar as the product being offered goes if you can make improvements in the process itself this can give you an edge.

Improve Customer Relations

Half the battle for online marketers when promoting something is developing a positive relationship with prospective customers. In fact the better the relationship you have the more likely you will get repeat business from these people. Trust and credibility is very important when marketing online and is a great area to focus upon to help you increase sales. The way you inter-relate with people when developing trust and credibility will be as unique as your personality itself. Practicing and perfecting your interpersonal relationship skills therefore will emphasize your uniqueness giving you an edge over other online marketers.

Marketing on the internet can be very competitive and finding your competitive edge will be the key to the amount of success you achieve. Most online marketers try to 'outdo' their competition but it may be easier to establish your own unique business brand instead. By doing this you have 'eliminated' the competition by developing an online brand uniquely your own! The 3 strategies we discussed above target focusing your energies on delivering a product, marketing message or customer relations that is unique to any other online. Done successfully you will then stand out and be more easily noticed by your target audience without having to concern yourself with the business of others!
