As an avid traveller, especially to more remote areas along the coast, there are many things that can go wrong if you do not take precautions before going there. This is even more important if you have small children travelling with you and your family.

Here are the most important points to take with you in your travels.

Many injuries can occur if you don't watch where you thread. Anything from broken glass or rubbish left behind from other travellers can find their way washed further down the coastline. Always remember to wear sand shoes as you walk along the beach, as thongs may not be enough to cover the sides of your feet.

Tell your children to never lift up any objects that they find along the sand. Harmless items such as leaves and weeds washed up by the waves can hide less favourable objects like left over stings from the marine life, poisonous fish scales, or even human objects which can be sharp. The most common mistake is getting stung by marine life. If in doubt, check that all your children are wearing protective hand wear.

If you find that there are others in the water with you, then make a note of things that can go wrong. A group of people surfing near your area can lead to trouble if they are not confident in their skills. Always be on the safe side and stay clear away from their boards. However, also check that you do not move into water which may be dangerous in itself, such as near rips and out going tides. Learn to identify where the rips are, which are usually spotted with more brown water. It is beneficial to have a member of your travelling group be trained in emergency response.

Without spending too much time worrying about your children, it may pay to just keep them wardened in a small enclosure. An easy way is to bring some string along with you, and mark out an area where they should not be allowed to move out from. There are also better alternatives, such as beach tents and canopies which can be purchased to keep them inside. Not only are they good to keeping your children safe from moving away, they also keep them cool on a warm day.
