People learn languages for a multitude of reasons. Hungarian is no different. You might wonder if this is the language for you. Well, let me give you the top 10 reasons why other learn Hungarian. You will probably find that at least one of them applies to you.

Here are The Top 10 Reasons to Learn Hungarian

  1. Heritage

If your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents were Hungarian, it is only a given that you should try to learn this beautiful language. If they were not, trust me, you still have some Hungarian in your blood. Attila's people have traveled to every single corner of the world in the last 1,000 years, so it is almost impossible to be 100% non-Hungarian!

  1. Love

If your significant other is Hungarian, you have a great motivator to learn the language. After all, you want to be able to steal their heart every now and then by hinting an expression or two in their native tongue, don't you? You probably also want to know what exactly he or she is yelling at you when you do something "wrong." On a second thought, you might not want to know that.

  1. It's interesting!

If you are drawn to languages that others find impossible to learn, you might want to try Hungarian. While it is not as hard as people claim, Hungarian is no walk in the park either. There is nothing more excruciating than trying to pronounce "gyönyöru"ségem," for a non-native. Then again, once you manage to do it, you are an instant hit with Hungarians of all ages, genders and walks of life.

  1. Bragging rights!

What better way to impress someone than to say that you speak Hungarian? It is a language that remains a mystery to most; therefore, it is sure to amaze most people. Plus, to be able to say that you speak the same language Béla Lugosi, Zsazsa Gábor, George Soros and many other famous artists, thinkers, scientists and sportsmen learned as their native tongue is not to be taken for granted!

  1. Looks good on your resume!

Want to find a way to stand out from the endless pool of applicants? Want to impress your new boss, and show him that you have stamina? Tell him you learned Hungarian "just because," and watch his or her jaw drop!

  1. Thousands of others do it too!

While Hungary might be a small country, its language is spoken by Hungarians all over the world, especially in the seven neighboring countries. As I have mentioned before, Magyars are all over the world, so you will never have to worry about not having someone to speak the language to. It is learned by thousands each year as a foreign language, so you will not be alone in your pursuit.

  1. It's an EU language!

Hungary is now a member of the European Union, which means that if you secure a Hungarian husband or wife, after a somewhat arduous process, you will be able to travel to any and all European countries that now allow Hungarians a free pass! Another reason to not only learn the language, but also actively practice it with the legendarily beautiful Hungarian ladies and handsome gentleman.

  1. For business

Hungary is a beautiful country to visit! It has long been a favorite tourist destination for citizens of the neighboring countries, but in the last decade, people from all continents have been discovering what this beautiful and hospitable country has to offer. Also, since Hungary is very welcoming toward foreign businesses, dozens of international corporations have opened branches in Budapest and other larger cities, as well as some plants and factories in the countryside. Doing business in Hungary is much easier with some understanding of the language.

  1. Fascinating culture

Hungary has a fascinating history and culture that is unfortunately not widely known. Wouldn't you like to know more about the land of goulash, paprika, Tokaji, Bull's Blood, medicinal waters and other miraculous Magyar things? How would you like to go there and order everything in their language to impress the locals?

  1. Just because…

The sad truth is that today there are less than 10 million Hungarians remaining in their native land, and the number is decreasing rapidly. So if you feel like helping us out, learn the language, immerse yourself in the culture, and see what happens!!! You might become an "Honorary Hungarian," a title bestowed upon those fully fluent in the language and familiar with the culture. Or learn it just because!

No matter what your reason is to learn Hungarian, if you decide to do so, you are embarking on a journey that might not be the easiest, but it will be extremely rewarding and enjoyable! Kellemes tanulást!
