Pets are subjected to the same amount denatured food as we are; that is why supplements are beneficial for them and in some cases, even vital. This is because they can provide the missing ingredients not found in the day to day diet, eliminate stored toxins from the body and boost immunity, especially when used daily. Although this is important for healthy pets, it is all the more crucial for those pets that are aging or fighting off infection or disease chronic or otherwise. Pet supplements containing vitamins or dietary minerals in the form of nutrients are included into the category of food according to a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines and other recommendations relating to foods, food production and food safety known as Codex Alimentarius.
Vitamins are required for bone growth, good vision and for the body’s metabolism. Minerals are essential for strong bones and teeth. However we must remember that pet supplements cannot make up for poor quality of foods and thus cannot replace the daily diet. Thus pet supplements are additions that help derive the maximum benefit out of the food and minimize the stressful effects of daily training and exercise. There are many kinds of pet supplements and some of them are discussed below.
Vitamin B12: This vitamin, given correctly, as a pet supplement, improves a dog’s appetite.
Vitamin C: This vitamin in moderate doses may be beneficial in maintaining the immune system and the skin.
Vitamin E: This vitamin helps to maintain good footpads and acts as a mild anti-inflammatory agent.Nutritional supplements and vitamins for pets like dogs and cats are crucial to pet health.
Glucosamine and chondroitin: These pet supplements, derived from shellfish, appear to increase the viscosity and volume of joint fluid. This, in turn, acts as a protective mechanism for the joint surfaces. However an older canine which has already developed arthritic changes, does not experience the beneficial "preventative" effects; but these pet supplements might still prove to be helpful.
Calcium and Manganese salts prevent the joints from deteriorating and strengthen overall bone health. This allows the pets to stay active well into old age. These supplements also keep younger dogs healthier and minimize the chance of bone and joint discomfort during strenuous exercises.
