Otolaryngologists are physicians trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. They are commonly referred to as ENT physicians, or ear, nose and throat doctors. For problems in these related areas, you should not hesitate to call these doctors, no matter how small your problems may seem to be.
Ear Problems
Earache – this occurs when parts of your ear is inflamed or swollen. An injury or infection can cause this. Use of pain relievers or doing warm compress on the affected area can resolve this easily.
Tinnitus – this is otherwise known as ringing in the ears. It can happen when you listen to loud sounds, or you have high blood pressure. Usually, it just annoys you, maybe even up to the point of it being stressful. But an ear nose and throat doctor should be consulted when tinnitus becomes too frequent and it bothers your sleep.
Nose Problems
Nosebleeds – these happen when you’re in a dry or cold environment. Usually, just lifting your head up can make the bleeding subside. Putting ice or a damp cloth over your nose can also help. For more severe cases, you should call an ear nose and throat doctor.
Post Nasal Drip – this refers to having mucus or phlegm stuck at the back of your throat. Having this mucus inside your nose, throat and sinus areas can lead to infection and bad breath. Moisturizing the said areas can get rid of this. Drink lots of liquid, breathe in steam, or use nasal/sinus moisturizers.
Sinusitis – this is an infection in the sinuses that usually produces symptoms like headaches and nasal congestion. There are nebulizers, oral pills, as well as home remedies available for treating sinusitis. The important thing is to clear out infectious particles, and moisturize the affected area so that infection doesn’t stay in the sinuses.
Allergies- these are triggered by unwanted elements in the environment, such as dust, pollen and smoke. Antihistamines are usually sufficient in taking away allergic reactions like itchy and watery eyes, runny nose, and difficulty in breathing.
Throat Problems
Sore Throat – this can be a symptom of a throat infection. When bacteria, or other foreign micro organisms settle in its area, the throat can become pained, making it hard to swallow and talk. Citrus juice, hot soup and resting the throat (by not talking too much) can make the soreness subside gradually.
Laryngitis – the overuse of your voice can lead to laryngitis. During its onset, the larynx gets swollen and causes hoarseness or coughing. Again, ear nose and throat doctors can provide the help you need in overcoming this condition, especially if infection is involved. But for simple cases, steam therapy and drinking warm liquids can take care of your laryngitis.
