FREEDOM FROM ARTHRITIS PAIN THROUGH TAI CHI

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis literally means "inflammation of the joints." It is a disease caused by the breakdown of the cartilage tissues inside the joints, either because of the regular wear and tear as one ages, or formation of the uric acid crystals on the joint lining. Arthritis is a very disturbing illness of the bones as it results to malfunction of body parts such as the hands, elbows, hips, back, neck, knees and feet.

The arthritis pain is usually the most common complaints of people suffering with this joint disease. It is not just because of the uncomfortable feeling, but also because it is chronic and can become severe in some cases. The joint area throbs, swells, become stiff and reddens. The worst part is they leave the body inefficient to participate in some activities.

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is a mind and body practice complementary with alternative medicine. It is often referred to as "moving-meditation". The practice of Tai Chi requires movement of the body slowly, gently, with awareness and with deep breathing (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine).

Tai Chi’s history can be traced back in ancient China and began as a martial art for the purpose of self defense. However later on, it became identified as a health beneficial exercise because of its positive contribution to the person’s general well being, physical condition, endurance of pain and stiffness, body coordination and balance, flexibility, muscle strength and sleep.

How does Tai Chi Helps Relieve Arthritis Pain?

According to a study made by The George Institute for International Health, Tai Chi has found to have positive health benefits for musculoskeletal pain as it is proven effective in improving pain and disability among arthritis patients. Since Tai Chi offers various movements especially with the bones—proper posture, movement, concentration and breathing, people seeking for relief especially from rheumatoid arthritis pain, usually finds Tai Chi very helpful. It increases the body’s flexibility, gives more strength to the bones, and increases the body’s tolerance for pain.

Moreover, Tai Chi is also becoming more advisable as it can foster social benefits when done by group. It is also not difficult to fit into one’s daily activities because the exercise can easily be done solo. Just as arthritis is becoming more alarming worldwide, Tai Chi is getting more popularity as an arthritis pain relief since it is effective, inexpensive, convenient, enjoyable, and even helps in other psychological benefits.
