There is a simple explanation for the difference between the pitch and chip shots in the game of golf. If this has been a cause of confusion, don't let the frustration take away from the great game of golf; this article is for you.
In golf, the pitch is a shot that uses a lot of air. Two-thirds of the shot is air, in fact. The other third is roll. It's that simple.
Now, the chip is a little different. It uses about one-third of it's existence in the day, and the other two-thirds is in the roll. You are going to use your 9, 7 and 5 irons while chipping. When you use a pitch shot, you're going to use a club with more angle to provide the loft you need. It's a simple formula. Chip: more earth, less air. Pitch: less earth, more air. Not really that complicated.
You are going to have many occasion when playing golf to use your pitch shot. It can be a valuable weapon in your golf arsenal. You could be stuck in a wide variety of unpleasant place where this shot is going to serve you. Sometimes in golf there are situations only loft can answer, and that is your pitch shot.
To become a master of the pitch, you're going to need a couple of components. One, a base of solid fundamentals, and two, the right lofted clubs. Just remember, the clubs with the flat faces are the ones you'll use to chip. And, the angled clubs like your sand or pitching wedges are used to get you that loft we were talking about just a bit ago.
You could catch a little break if your golf ball is lying sunny-side up, but often times it is buried in a heavy rough. Nonetheless, this shot's importance is underestimated in the game of golf. Master the pitch, and you're going to see strokes melt off your handicap. Neglect it, and it can be a continual cause of frustration.
This may be a little odd, but the next time you have a critical pitch to make, visualize your golf shot as throwing a pillow high to the air. Works for me, give a try your next time out.
Make a commitment to get better at it, put the time in to do it, and you're going to get more enjoyment from a round of golf. I guarantee it.
