For those Weekend Warriors, the Experts at Diamond Cut Lawns can show you how. There are six steps to follow when doing bed edging. We will go into detail of those six steps below.

Step 1: Cut the grass edge to form the landscape line. This is where you will layout the design of the landscape bed. We suggest using spray paint to lay out the cut line first. If you want straight or curved lines, this is where to make them so you can see how it looks before you cut the grass. Once you like the layout, cut the grass.

Step 2: Remove all sod and any other debris. At this point you should have bare dirt and plants. No grass clippings or twigs should be in the landscape bed. Even out any high spots so that the mulch can be spread evenly without high and low spots.

Step 3: Make sure there is a clean cut edge with the sides have a 3" flat wall. Use a flat shovel to make the sides straight and flat. It's important to have a flat wall because that will allow a solid amount of mulch to go here.

Step 4: Place mulch around all plants. Be sure not to suffocate them and allow the plants some breathing room. If you have old mulch, you may want to remove it or spread it out across the entire landscape bed and put new mulch over the entire area.

Step 5: Place mulch to the cut edge. You should have a clear distinction between mulch and grass. There should be no mixing of the two. If there is a mixing going on, perhaps you have some sod hanging over the cut edge or the cut edge wasn't flat.

Step 6: Make sure the entire landscape bed has an even coat of at least 2-3" thick. Check for high spots and try to even them out. The mulch should look like a blanket lying over the entire landscape bed. If it looks chunky or clear high and low spots, then you will want to even them.

Proper bed edging is a great low cost way to make your landscaping look great. Diamond Cut Lawns has several different colors of mulch available and can deliver the mulch to your doorstep too.
