If modern cars simply don’t do it for you then here is something special, a look back at cars from the 1970s that will always be greatly remembered.
The decade that brought us disco and the optional 8-track tape decks, the 1970s also brought us some memorable vehicles. From the Porsche 928 to the VW Golf Mk I, the BMW E9 Coupe to the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, there are still a number of these fantastic cars around today, however, they have been well preserved and any collector or enthusiast looking to purchase one can expect to pay good money. Here’s a look back at some of those memorable cars from the decade:
Lancia Beta Montecarlo
Produced from 1975 to 1982 in Italy, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo was available in Coupe and Spider versions. The Spider version featured a unique roll-back Targa style convertible roof that was manually operated. During 1976 and 1977, a lower powered version of the Spider, known as the Lancia Scorpion, was sold in the United States. This car was modified in order to meet US emissions, lighting and crash test requirements, and was given its name because Chevrolet had already named one of their vehicles the Monte Carlo.
Porsche 928
Originally designed to take over from the 911, the Porsche 928 combined power, comfort, sports performance and luxury. Porsche’s only coupe powered by a front-mounted V8, the 928 was the first mass-produced V8 Porsche, becoming the fastest car sold in North America during 1983. With a top speed of 146 mph, the 928 was available as a 4.5L V8, 4.7L V8, 5.0L V8 and a 5.4L V8 [1].
BMW E9 Coupe
Produced from 1968 to 1975, the E9 featured a BMW M30 straight-6 engine available in a 2.5L, 2.8L and 3.0L. The E9 had success in racing, winning the European Touring Car Championship and the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. The CSL model of the E9 is extremely collectible today and was the first project of the BMW M Division, featured a 3.0L 197HP engine capable of a top speed of 137 mph [2].
