The classic dog trick that keeps the audience amazed every time it is performed is none other than "On trust and Paid for". This dog trick can be a bit tricky to teach. However, there are many different styles for performing this dog trick.
-
To teach this dog trick to your dog, you can start by calling him. Then you need to hold his face with one hand, while with the other, you have to balance the food on his nose.
-
Next, you have to speak to him "On trust, on trust". When you do this, you have to firm your grip over his head with one hand and point a controlling finger at him with the other. In addition, repeat, "On trust, on trust".
-
Later, you can release his head, and say, "Paid for". With this, give a little tap at his chin. This would cause him to fling the food item in the air, and catch it. This would not be possible in the first few trials, as the food may fall on the ground. In which case, he should be allowed to eat the food that fell down.
-
When you practice this dog trick for sometime in this way, you will not need to hold his head with your hand. You can simply place the food on his nose for him to balance. He will only catch it when you say the words "Paid For".
A nice alternative to this dog trick is to ask the dog to keep the food in his mouth, without swallowing it, until he is told, "Paid For". This dog trick can be carried out with an interesting dialogue with the dog. As when he has not swallowed, you may say, "All good dogs will agree, you should never eat the food that is on trust. You look like a pretty good dog to me." On trust needs to be said slightly louder, for the dog to understand it better. Now when you say "But we don’t need to worry about that because I just came to know that this has already been "Paid For". That is when the dog swallows, and the audience is amazed at the dramatic effect.
The same trick can also be altered by making the dog to fling the food at the count of a certain number. You can count until three, and the dog has to wait for that number. This needs a lot of practice, as the dog could grab the food at the wrong count. However, if you take special care to make the number three more audible to him, then this dog trick can be learnt faster by him. You can repeat different numbers and words to the dog. When he hears the number 3, only then will he perform the trick.
"On trust and Paid For" dog trick needs to be taught with endurance and understanding for your dog. If your dog does not learn that quickly, you still need to be kind to him, and enjoy the experience.
