In this day and age, refrigerators not only store food and beverages, they also provide water and ice through the water dispenser and ice makers that are stored in the door of the refrigeration unit. While these capabilities are nice to have, the water and ice produced through these refrigeration units do not always have the same taste and quality as expected by consumers.

Although having ice cold water at their fingertips through the refrigerator is ideal, if it tastes like chlorine, it ruins the refreshing aspect of chilled water. Whirlpool water filter cartridges and others like them are the answer to the funny tasting water coming from the refrigeration units.

Whirlpool refrigerators are now built with the capacity to have a water filter cartridge, either made by Whirlpool or by another company that is made for refrigerators, to slip right into an easy slot, which serves to purify all of the water coming through the unit, whether through the water dispenser or through the ice maker. Thus, consumers are able to have fresh tasting, ice cold water any time they want to drink it.

How Does it Work?

Whirlpool water filter cartridges come in a couple of different ways, but the most common method of water purification is through absorption cartridges. Brita water filter cartridges can also be used in most Whirlpool water filter cartridge slots in Whirlpool refrigerators, so it gives consumers the ability to choose what filter works best for their families.

Whirlpool water filter cartridges are filled with either carbon or granularly activated charcoal which serves to absorb the pollutants in the water. These filters either remove or greatly reduce the chlorine in water, which is what helps to improve the taste so much when they are introduced to the refrigerator. They also remove particles from the water as well as other organic matter such as pesticides which are harmful to humans and especially children.

Some filters also have a particulate filter in conjunction with the absorbent filter material for even cleaner water. These filters clean out sand, bacteria and some pathogens from the water. With both of these filters, the consumer must be sure to follow the directions of how often to change the filter so that the water remains ideally pure. If the Whirlpool water filter cartridges are not changed regularly enough, they can become clogged and will not allow the water to flow freely through them.
