Pool or billiards is played on a billiards pool table all over the world. There are numerous pubs, bars, and restaurants that have billiards pool tables, and they have become increasingly popular in private homes as well.

Although you may not have even played pool, you've no are no doubt familiar with the most commonly used equipment, including the billiards pool table. Here are some facts about the basic equipment and the type of slate that is used.

Pool or billiards is defined as any game that played on a billiards pool table with balls and a cue. Pool is a game that depends on the basics of geometry and physics and in order to become an expert in pool requires a skillful mastery of the game’s equipment. This equipment includes:

• Balls: While each game of pool has different rules, the object of the game is always to strike the ball and move it, usually into another ball.

• Cue: A cue is a tapered, long, rod with a cushioned tip on the small end that is used to strike the balls.

• Table: A billiards pool table is the playing surface which the balls move on. It depends on which game the table was made for, it may not or may have pockets allowing the balls to fall into them. . . . . . . . . . . . .

The games that are played on a billiards pool table that has pockets is known as snooker or pool while the most common game that is played on a pocket less table called known as billiards or carom. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The Slate

Usually, the surface of a billiards pool table is made from a big slab of slate. This slate is a type of rock that cleaves into flat, broad. Slate is primarily composed of quartz, mica, and chlorite. The slate is ground and polished into a perfectly flat surface, which is the reason why it is used in a billiards pool table. Italian slate is usually desired for the best billiards pool table.

An inexpensive recreational billiards pool table uses a non slate playing material including:

• Permaslate and Slatron: This is a synthetic, hard material that is basically sheets of plastic that are placed over some particle board.

• Honeycomb: This is a plastic, stiff honeycomb type of material that is sandwiched between 2 sheets of plastic.

• Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF): This is a flat piece of material that is made from compressing tiny pieces of wood together, usually known as particle board or pressed wood.

One of the biggest problems with a non slate surface is that they don’t have the durability to maintain a flat playing surface for any amount of time because they warp easily.
