We all have heard about the beneficial aspects of leading an active lifestyle and getting proper amounts of exercise. In addition to cardiovascular benefits, exercise can do a lot to maintain healthy levels of self-esteem and stimulate feelings of well-being. But what about the case of women who have had a mastectomy and who now wear a prosthesis during normal day-to-day activities?

Several options are available that might help someone in this position to feel comfortable during periods of heavy activity, and yet still retain the same beautiful form and balance afforded by wearing a breast prosthesis. While silicone-based prostheses are designed to have the same look and feel as natural tissue, some of them can become heavy and cause discomfort during periods of higher activity. These prostheses are made to slip into a fitted pouch in a mastectomy bra, which means while they are close to the torso, they are held enough away from the body to possibly cause imbalance, especially with women who are naturally larger in breast size, which could lead to strain.

Fortunately, a modern solution has presented itself in the form of lightweight forms that are ideal for periods of higher activity. Examples like the Amoena Classic or Tria Light incorporate the same use of silicone in the form, but are 25% lighter than standard prostheses. This allows the woman to experience higher degrees of exercise and activity while remaining more comfortable.

Nancy is an active business woman. She leads a very active professional life, and her daily activity is supplemented by playing tennis. She decided to try the Amoena Classic Light while replacing an existing form. She notes: "It has made a big difference - I'm not even aware that it's there," she says. "It is far more comfortable than my old one and once it's in the pocket of my bra, it doesn't move."

Another woman in her early 50s, Selma, who also had a mastectomy suffers from lymphedema, states: "Since my diagnosis, I try to cram as much into each day as possible - I've realized that life is too short to sit around all the time." Selma's old breast form tended to weight her bra to the point that she felt her bra strap cutting into her shoulders. In addition, the form tended to move around which left her feeling concerned about an uneven appearance.

Selma reports: "The reduced weight on my shoulders certainly helps - it seems to aid in circulation in that area, and I also find it easier to maintain my posture."

Concerning whether or not the lighter form might cause an uneven or unnatural appearance, "not so," says Janet. "It looks fine, and it fits perfectly into the cup of my bra." Everyone agrees that the lighter weight forms pass the all-important hug test too.

If you are looking for the most current lightweight forms for your own comfort, consider one of these lighter alternatives.
