This autumn, Mercedes-Benz is to launch new safety systems that actively prevent cars from straying into the paths of others. In a review of the new feature, WhatCar.com observes that it is an extension of that which is already available.
Indeed, at present, Mercedes-Benz offers blind-spot and lane-change warnings that alert the driver if the car is about to move into the path of another coming up behind, or drift unintentionally into another lane. "The big difference with the new active systems," the review explained, "is that they apply the brakes on one side of the car to bring it back onto a straight course, even if there is no immediate risk of a collision."
Further to this, the website noted that the active blind spot feature operates between 20 and 125mph, although a visual warning will be given right up to the maximum speed of 155mph. The active lane-change system, meanwhile, works between 35mph and 125mph "as long as there is a solid white line on one side of the car and a dotted line on the other".
Both safety features will initially be available on the revised S-Class saloon and CL coupe plus the E-Class family. And in addition to the safety features it seems the CL 63 AMG, its flagship large sports coupe, features stylish visual modifications and a completely redeveloped powertrain.
In a review of the new model, NewCarNet.co.uk explains that, in ordinary CL-Class guise, "this Merc is a cruiser". By virtue of receiving the AMG treatment, however, it suddenly becomes a true sports car. "The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine with a peak output of up to 571 hp and a torque of up to 900 Nm, is combined with the unique AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission," the review noted.
This, the website said, contributes towards a considerable increase in driving dynamics, while at the same time guaranteeing an "improvement in fuel consumption and a reduction in emissions". Other highlights of the new model include a full aluminium crankcase, four-valve technology with variable intake valve timing, and standard start/stop function.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz announced recently that its overall worldwide sales continue to improve, rising by 17 per cent in July compared to the previous month. "Explore the current model CL-Class and sign-up to be the first to hear more about the new generation CL-Class
