Greasy, limp and lifeless—if this is the hair you wake up to every morning, you probably have oily hair. All hair types present their own set of challenges, and oily hair, though it requires daily cleansing, is one of the more manageable types because it’s not dry.
If your hair is oily, there are several ways you can go. You can put it up in a bun, or try wearing super stylish hair accessories as a distraction. That’s a good place to start, but here are some clever ways that you can get away with limp locks.
First, as with any battle, it is vital that you know what you’re dealing with so you can find the most effective ways to confront it. What causes oily hair? Oily hair results from the scalp’s sebaceous glands secreting excessive amounts of sebum. Sebum is the natural oil that protects the hair and scalp from external damage and prevents from drying. This can come from your family’s genes, from the hormonal changes in your body, from everyday stress, or from frequent use of strong shampoos and styling products.
Now that you know what you’re up against, here are products and hairstyles that can help you cleverly hide a greasy mane:
Bangs Bang Bang!
If you have bangs, the hair resting on your face can soak up the oil on your forehead, making your hair oilier. It works to grow your hair longer, and keep it away from your face with non-slip hair clip. But if you don’t want to say bye-bye to the bangs, a great way to hide the end-of-the-day slump is by doing the "bang pouf."
Here’s how: Pull your bangs away from your face and tease them upwards. Twist them once, lower them to the top of your head, and push forward into a pouf. Secure with bobby pins.
"Band" Aid
Nothing beats a dainty headband when it comes to keeping hair away from the face while adding a touch of style, especially now that hair accessories are in fashion once again.
Here’s how: With a headband, gently pull your hair back about two to three inches from your hairline. Add a spritz of hairspray. The alcohol in the hairspray will help soak up some of the oil!
Up and Away
Never underestimate the power of an updo. It may seem boring, but an updo hides oily hair best! Plus, most updo styles work better on oily hair. If your hair is not long enough, you can also do a half-updo. Pull half of your hair up and then secure it with hair accessories. Just allow the remaining half to fall onto your shoulders. For better coverage, curl the ends so that the waves can distract the eye from the oil, and give your hair some volume.
Here’s how: If you already have naturally curly hair, then feel free to experiment! If not, then you can use a no-clip barrel iron to create waves. Normal curling irons work just as well. Just remember to wrap your hair around the barrel without clipping it closed so that you end up with more natural-looking waves.
