Walnut oil is mostly produced in the Perigord and Burgundy regions of France. It is, also, produced in Australia, New Zealand and in California, of the USA. Unrefined walnut oil is made from nuts that are dried and cold pressed. Good quality walnut oil is topaz in color with a rich nutty taste.
This natural oil has a variety of health benefits. Its high omega 3 content helps protect the heart as well as offering anti-cancer and weight reducing properties. It offers rich antioxidants benefits, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is rich in linoleic acid and the benefits of vitamin E, A and C.
It is not used for high temperature cooking, but used, instead to pour over salads or pastas used as dipping sauce for bread or cheese and brushing over grilled foods or vegetables. An unopened bottle of walnut oil may last up to three years, but once it is opened it looses its quality. After opening, its shelf life is six to twelve months and should be kept in a cool, dark or refrigerated location to prevent from becoming rancid.
This natural oil has aromatherapy benefits and is used in massages, typically in combination with other aromatic oils. It dries quickly, leaves skin feeling refreshed, without a greasy residue.
It offers skin care benefits by reducing wrinkles and facial lines, eczema, psoriasis, warts and fungal infections. Caution should be heeded to those allergic to nuts or skin sensitivities, to avoid using walnut oil, due to unknown adverse reactions. This is a deep penetrating, nourishing, moisturizing oil that is great for dry flaky skin.
It is slow to trace and should be used in combination with oils that are high in saturated fat. This natural oil is a great choice to use in lots of homemade skin care products including: facial products, foot products, lotions and as massage oils.
