You are so glad to have delivered your baby, but bringing your infant home comes with many new responsibilities and challenges including looking after your newborns health. As a new parent there probably is no such thing as a typical day or night. At least not for the next few months.
Don't forget that your child has just gone through a huge change as well, just entering the outside world from the womb is an enormous feat. You both need to adapt to the new change, now is the time to put into practice what you have learnt about your newborns health. Keeping your baby close and snuggly wrapped is going to help.
Even adjusting to breastfeeding will take some getting used too, for both you and the baby. If you are going to be using baby formula, then you will have to feed your infant about every 3 to 5
hours. With breastfeeding, this could be more frequent at first. It might feel like all you are doing is constantly breastfeeding and it is true breastfeeding will take up a large portion of your day and night. Now you know how cows might have felt. At least you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing everything possible to care for your newborns health.
Of course you will have tons of diapers to change, but slowly the two of you will adapt into routine. In the beginning you will be changing the baby's diaper shortly after feeding and then about once an hour or so. With the newborn infant you have to check their diapers frequently.
You will need to give your baby a sponge bath until their umbilical cord has fallen off. Every day you will want to wash and clean their bottoms. Using a soft washcloth you can wipe your baby's hands, face and neck with warm water. After the first few weeks, you can give the infant a full bath, usually every day is good so they don't develop diaper rash. Remember that too much bathing can cause the baby's skin to dry out, you might want to add a few drops of baby oil into the bath water. You have to see what works best for your and your baby.
The baby's finger and toenails will grow very quickly. Regular trimming will be required so that the baby doesn't scratch themselves. Even at birth some baby's tend to have very long nails. The nail could also be attached high on the nail bed. If so, you must gently press the fingerpad away from the nail and then clip it with a pair of baby nail clippers. Sometimes it is best to do this when the baby is sleeping. This way they don't jerk their tiny fingers and toes away from you.
During your first month you will be very busy during the day and night. Things will start to settle down slowly and many infants start to sleep through the night as early as six weeks. It will feel as though all you are doing is changing diapers and feeding our baby. If you can get some help so you can give yourself some quiet time too. A good soak in a bubble bath does wonders.
The first month of life is crucial to your newborns health, it is the starting point of their journey into our world. Of course you want to give your newborn the best start possible.
