If you still don't have a video camera hooked up to your computer, then you are missing a world of fun. Perhaps you have thought about getting a web camera but feel intimidated by the technology. There is no need to feel intimidated. As with most computer add-on technology, web cameras are 'plug and play'. What this means is you just load up the software, plug in the camera, and you are ready to go.

Loading up the software typically means inserting a disc into your DVD/CD drive and following the on-screen prompts. It's a very simple and almost automatic process that takes just a few minutes. The web camera, if it has a cable, will simply plug into one of the slots on your computer. If you have a wireless web camera there is no hook-up required.

So now you know how easy it is to install, which one should you buy? My recommendation would be to buy the one that you can afford, and, that gives you a whole range of choices. While the cameras at the low end of the scale ($25-$50) are very serviceable for video calls with friends and family, if you want to post videos to Facebook or YouTube, a slightly higher investment ($55-$120) will give you a higher quality camera that produces sharper images, and, should also include a built in microphone.

Since you will find many uses for a web camera once you have one, I recommend getting one that produces the sharpest images, has a built in microphone, image enhancing features, and is also wireless. I should also add, look for a unit that can also sit on a flat surface so that you are not tied to having to keep the camera on your computer. If you look for these options you will be sure to buy a very versatile camera that will serve you well for years.

A great time to buy a web camera is just before a new model is released. The previous models will be on sale and can be had for a bargain. Unless you need the innovative features that may be included in the new model, save your money for something else.

If you look at Logitech's Quickcam Pro 9000, it has immense capability. Most home users wouldn't need much more as it comes equipped with a world renowned Carl Zeiss lens, premier autofocus for sharp images, HD video capture and recording, a built in microphone, can sit on a flat surface, and much more.

You will master your web camera in a few minutes, so don't let technology worries get in your way. Get yourself a web camera and experience the magic.
