If you are suffering from panic attacks, then you are probably having anxious thoughts about having anxious thoughts. Yes, I know that sounds weird, but once you have suffered from panic attacks it's not uncommon to begin worrying about the next time another panic attack comes on.

What are you afraid of?

Being caught in traffic.

Having an attack in the elevator.

Losing it in a grocery store.

Maybe you are constantly in fear and never feel free of anxiety.

When your brain thinks there is danger your adrenaline starts flowing throughout your bloodstream and time seems to stop. You start to feel your heart pumping and you may feel like you're having a heart attack. Oftentimes, people will start to feel uneasiness in their stomach. This entire process only takes a few minutes from start to full blown panic symptoms. These fearful thoughts start a tidal wave of other fearful thoughts.

The key to peace of mind is stopping the panic attack as soon as you notice it. This next step is very important. Whatever you do-- remember, don't try to stop the thoughts by focusing on them because your brain can only focus on one thing at a time and anxious thoughts are not what you want to focus on while you are having a panic attack.

Steps for Success

The thoughts are not the problem; it's your emotional response to the thoughts. The thoughts will come and go and your job is to call it what it is. For example, if you are afraid that you might have a panic attack in the grocery store, acknowledge the thought take a deep breath.

Focus on something directly around you.

For example, if you are in an elevator with people around you start a conversation. Focus your thoughts on your destination and see yourself meeting the person you were going to meet. Practice moving your thoughts from one place to another exercising power and control over your thoughts. Literally, you should practice having different controlled thoughts throughout the day. You decided when the thoughts start and when they stop. You can think about whatever you want to think about, but remember to think about a single idea for approximately one minute at a time.
